A climate scientist, Edgar McGregor, utilized his small Facebook weather page, Altadena Weather and Climate, to warn Californians about impending wildfires, potentially saving hundreds of lives. On January 6, he accurately predicted severe Santa Ana wind conditions and advised residents to prepare for evacuation, just before the Palisades Fire started on January 7. McGregor had monitored weather patterns since late December, recognizing alarming similarities to conditions that previously caused devastating fires in Hawaii and Paradise. His timely warnings allowed residents extra time to prepare, despite his own home being spared while many neighbors lost theirs. McGregor continues to update the community as wildfires rage across California, emphasizing that the threat may not be over yet due to potential future disasters.
