Three researchers from Simon Fraser University (SFU) have received over $320,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evan’s Leaders Fund to develop the new Integrated Watershed Sciences Laboratory (IWSL). With matching funds from the B.C. Knowledge Development Fund and partner contributions, the total funding reaches nearly $810,000.
Co-led by assistant professors Chelsea Little, Brendan Murphy, and Shawn Chartrand, the IWSL aims to enhance understanding of watersheds, including their current state and changes due to natural and human impacts like climate change. The lab will focus on understanding the dynamics of watersheds, which are complex systems influenced by various factors at different scales.
The interdisciplinary team will address knowledge gaps related to how watersheds evolve, manage natural hazards, and assess ecosystem services in changing climates. The funding will facilitate equipment purchases for field studies and benefit students and partners engaged in tackling environmental challenges in Canada.
