The City of Grand Rapids has received permit approval from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for the Grand River restoration project, allowing it to start the bidding process for construction, anticipated to begin in summer 2025. After seven months of collaboration between the city and state agencies, the modified design for the project has been finalized. The restoration aims to enhance the river’s ecosystem by removing four low-head dams, placing natural rocks and boulders to create rapids, and installing structures to improve fish passage and habitat diversity. A final federal Environmental Assessment approval is pending, which will determine additional funding. EGLE expressed support for the project due to its environmental benefits.
