In 2023, natural disasters and extreme weather events dominated global news, displacing and killing tens of thousands. The most significant incident was a twin earthquake in southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6, which resulted in over 59,000 fatalities. Other notable earthquakes included a magnitude 6.8 quake in Morocco, which killed around 2,900, and a series of quakes in Afghanistan leading to nearly 3,000 deaths. Severe flooding and heavy rainfall were triggered by typhoons and storms in China, Libya, Mexico, and Europe, while the Horn of Africa, recovering from a devastating drought, faced flash floods. Additionally, record droughts affected various regions globally, including the Amazon. Scientists warn that such severe weather events will become increasingly frequent due to climate change.
