Alec Egan and other artists in Los Angeles faced devastating losses due to recent wildfires, with Egan’s home destroyed, and his paintings intended for an upcoming exhibition lost. Similarly, Camilla Taylor and Paul McCarthy also lost their homes, while an extensive archive of composer Arnold Schoenberg’s works was destroyed. A list of impacted artists has been compiled by Kathryn Andrews, and the devastation raises concerns regarding Frieze LA’s upcoming fair.
In response, various organizations, led by the J. Paul Getty Trust, announced the LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund, which launched with $12 million to assist affected artists and arts workers. The fund aims to address the urgent needs of a creative community significantly impacted by the tragedy, with applications for emergency grants opening soon. Other fundraising initiatives are also underway to support those affected by the fires.
